Photographing Your Husband: A How-to Guide
In honor of Valentine’s Day, TPW Team Member Sabra McKibbon is sharing some secrets for how she gets such great photos of her sweetie.
I am one of those rare creatures whose husband is willing, happy even, to pose for pictures. I say rare, because a quick google search for “taking pics of your sweetie” brings back results like, “Get him drunk,” and, “You think it’s hard taking pictures of your kids? Try husbands.” Lol, I can imagine the pain of that, because I have five children who all suffer in varying degrees from Photographer’s Child Syndrome.
My groundbreaking (okay, maybe not groundbreaking, lol) tip for taking pics of your sweetie boils down this–make it fun! Is there something that he especially enjoys doing that would give you photo ops of him in action? Or how about some pics of him playing or reading with the kids? And don’t forget to think outside the box. I took a series of shots of my husband on the day he had a minor surgical procedure. Definitely not your typical photo shoot, but it kept us both busy and brought some fun into an otherwise stressful day.
If you want shots that are more portrait than documentary, you might need some extra creativity to get his cooperation. At the end of last summer my husband agreed to shave his ratty, overgrown beard for me over a period of several days (yeah, not a beard fan here). We turned it into a project, and I took daily portraits documenting the removal stages. And since he’s a ham, he really got into it, even creating different personalities to go along with the looks.
Avoiding ‘Stern Photographer Boss’ mode (which is easy to slip into when you are shooting family), and embracing ‘Wow Fun Photographer’ mode, should help bring you the results you’re looking for. Good luck!
