Little Superheros
We are constantly in awe of Renee Bergeron. Not only is she the mom to fourteen kids (um, yeah you read that number correctly!), she is an amazing birth photographer and an engaging blogger. Inspired by the health struggles of her youngest child, Renee has begun photographing kids with special needs kids dressed as superheros to help show them their own strength. What a special way to use her photographic talent! Renee, you are just too awesome for words and we so are happy to have you as part of our TPW community!
My three year old son, Apollo, was born with a rare heart defect that wasn’t diagnosed until he was eighteen months old. He has spent much of his life working hard to eat, breathe and play; activities most toddlers take for granted. Last spring I was inspired to take some photos of him dressed up as a super hero. Aside for getting cute images, I really wanted Apollo to view himself as strong, a fighter, a super hero. I only had about five minutes of shooting time; two year olds arenʼt exactly known for their long attention spans.
Apollo loved the images and so did I. It was easy to see I had accomplished what I set out to do. Not long after that I started thinking about other parents of children with special needs. I loved the images of Apollo as a super hero. Wouldnʼt other parents love them as well? With that, The Superhero Project was born.
I posted on local Moms of Kids With Special Needs group about what I was doing, and there was a strong interest. I have done all of these shoots at no charge, and given the parents access to the digital files. For me, this isnʼt about making a profit, but bringing a smile to the faces of these children and their parents.
So far I have had the privilege of photographing four Superheros: Avery, Victoria, Avi and Apollo. All four kids have done fabulously and I was so happy that the images look and feel unique. Each child faces different challenges just as each child has a distinct personality. With The Superhero Project, I set out to highlight each child. While their special needs are what brought them to the shoot, I wanted the images to capture their spirit.
I am so excited as spring draws near and the weather warms up so I can schedule more of these sessions.
