Jennifer Warthan is sharing why she loves the alternatives to the pricier “professional” labeled film stocks.

We all know those great little secrets that save us some cash…the little coffee shop that serves way better brew than that giant chain and costs less. Or maybe you swear by coconut oil instead of that pricey moisturizer. I keep my camera bag stocked with some of those little secrets…  inexpensive, consumer film that yields results I actually prefer to more well-known brands.

Fuji Superia 400

Do you love warm tones and mild grain? Then you may adore Kodak Gold 200. The skin tones with this film stock cannot be beat. Think peaches and cream and loveliness. The low ISO of this film means that your images will be smoother than with a higher ISO film and the tones are warmer than what you will see with Fuji films. My favorite part about this film is that it doesn’t tend to result in magenta tones like so many other stocks. Colors render true-to-life, vibrant and warm. I use this film for everything – personal work, sessions and weddings. It’s very versatile and I’ve also had great luck pushing it a stop or two.

Need a higher ISO than 200? Or maybe cooler tones are your thing. I also keep a few rolls of Fuji Superia 400 around. It’s a great, fast film that will give you drool-worthy greens and blues. Colors tend to be punchy with this film and very rarely do I have to make any edits when using this film. I love to use it outside in the spring and summer to bring out the cool green of the trees and crops around our  house. It also brings out the best in my redheads!

The next time you’re out, swing by a drugstore and see what they have in stock (or order online!) It’s always fun to experiment with film and if you find a new favorite then you just might save a few dollars as well!
