There are many reasons why some of our members love shooting film. We thought it would be fun to ask several of our forum members to share their favorite film images and to tell us why the image is special to them.

 Canon EOS-3 | Kodak Portra 160

Kerry Lake

I love the simplicity and anonymity of the image and the tones. I love that her little freckles show so clearly (they weren’t nearly as clear in the similar digital version of this shot). And it just screams beach vacation to me! And I have a thing for centered images, so I love the composition. It’s also a favorite because I used my mom’s old Yashica 50mm manual lens. It makes me feel old school and nostalgic to use that lens on my film camera.

 Canon EOS-3 | Fuji Pro 400H

Jessica Remus

Every summer in August, we stay in cabins on a lake in northern Michigan near Mackinaw City. These pups at the local general store caught my eye, they are out there every day. I went back a couple of times to try to catch them. I just loved all of the colors on the building and how calm the dogs were.

Nikon N80 | Kodak Tri-X 400

Heidi Adams

I have always loved his shot of my son, Thomas. We were in open shade, and I was playing around with underexposing Kodak Tri-X 400 (this is shot at ISO 1600). I love how the grain looks with the narrow depth of field, and shooting black and white film is truly a joy. There is little to no editing involved. It comes out with a nice balance of blacks/whites/contrast, with a deep rich tonal range, and no clipping.

Kodak No. 1 Autographic Junior | Ilford Delta 100

Karen Mault

This is one of my favorite B&W images. It is a panorama done with my grandfather’s Kodak No. 1 Autographic Junior camera, circa 1918. I love using antique cameras and especially this one as there is the family connection. I did a whole series of low angle images with this camera but only one panorama. The image was created by rotating the camera clockwise for each image and then contact printing the negatives alongside each other. I processed the film and made the print myself. The flare is a light leak from the antique camera. It appears randomly on the images and is one of the interesting things about using vintage, well-used cameras. The image is also special to me since it won third place in Traditional Monochrome at the 2nd Annual Juried Photography Exhibition put on by the Beaufort County Arts Council in Washington, NC.

 Mamiya 645pro | Kodak Ektar 100

Celeste Jones

This is one of my favorites for many reasons. I love the colors and the kids who don’t know each other playing. I was so fascinated by the girl with the bucket, and she was what drew me in.

Canon AE-1 | Fuji Pro 400H

Debbie vdS

This is taken with Fuji Pro 400H and my Canon AE-1, my favorite film and camera. I have six film cameras and this was my very first found in a Salvos store for $50. It’s so perfect to keep in my handbag and is light and easy to use and has the most reliable in-camera meter! It’s also a very cool, hipster looking camera! Fuji400H is my choice for winter (here in Australia we have just finished winter and this is a mid-winter image). On the East Coast of Australia we don’t have too many very cold, dreary days so the ISO 400 is perfect. In summer, Ektar is loaded! This image is of my daughter and her friends together for a surfing lesson. I love the detail in the sky and sand and that we had the beach almost all to ourselves!
