Hi, everyone. Jes Gwozdz here. I have an important announcement about the Studio Lighting Fundamentals workshop at The Photographer Within. 2015 will mark the 5th year that this course has been running online as an instructor-led workshop. The April 20th run of the course will be the last run in a traditional 5-week instructor-led format. The good news is that the course will still be available at TPW, but it will be in a different format.

What is the new format like?
Shortly this workshop will be converted into a self-paced study module. It will contain all of the same content that the current instructor-led workshop does (PDFs with detailed explanations, lighting diagrams, pullbacks, videos, shooting assignments); however, students will have the flexibility to work at their own pace. But don’t be fooled into thinking this is some run-of-the-mill ebook! Along with the purchase of the module, students will have access to a private workshop forum area. One of the great benefits of all workshops at TPW is infinite access (yes, FOREVER!) to workshop alumni forums as long as you keep an active forum membership. My plan for the new Studio Lighting Fundamentals course revision will be to combine incoming students with alumni in one forum, so this means students can interact with people who have completed the workshop as well as those who are currently working through the material. Pricing and release date of the self-paced workshop will be announced shortly, but if you want one last chance to learn about studio lighting in an instructor-led format with me and teaching assistant Heather Rodburg, now is your chance because registration is open for the April 20th run.

What are former students saying?

  • I am SO happy to no longer be intimidated by studio gear, and I feel ready to go beyond the basics.
  • I feel confident going into a studio session and I even see improvements in my natural light work as well.
  • Before this class, my lighting was just hit or miss and I dreaded doing studio sessions because I wasn’t for sure how they would turn out. Now I’m not hesitant any more. I look forward to my studio sessions and feel much more confident about them.
  • Of all the classes I have ever taken, this one has made the strongest impact on my photography. I have taken several studio classes before, but this is the first time it has all come together for me. Whether a beginner, or some experience… each lesson had something for everyone.
  • I am walking away from this class with both an excitement and newfound passion for studio lighting, whereas before, I dreaded the thought of ever using anything but natural!
  • I was already familiar with studio lighting) but WOW! taking this class really connected all the dots for me.
  • I’ve had my studio lights for about five years and have always been so intimidated by them, never used them properly, had so- so inconsistent results. I should have taken the class five years ago. Step by step, everything is explained so well and there is no such thing as a dumb question! I am forever grateful for this class.
  • If you have studio lights or are thinking of purchasing light, take this class. This class has made a huge difference in my work. No more guessing. Now I know how to meter a shot for different scenarios. I’m super excited to practice everything I learned.
  • After the first assignment I had people who didn’t know I was taking a workshop asking me what was going on because my studio portraits had improved so much!

What sets TPW’s studio lighting workshop apart from other studio workshops?
As an instructor, I really want you to understand the hows and whys of what you are doing with your equipment. I am not the kind of instructor who will tell you to buy the exact equipment that I have and to place it a certain distance from your subject. I will teach you how to meter your lights to have total control of your outcome. It will no longer be a guessing game when you pull out your studio gear.  My goal is to give everyone a solid understanding of the basics so that they can adapt those skills to suit their style and vision. If you look at the alumni images below you can see that the photographers have a solid understanding of how to position their lights and expose their images properly, yet none of the images look the same. They all reflect the vision of each individual creator, and as a teacher that just makes my heart sing!

Jessica Gwozdz

Jessica Gwozdz ran a successful portrait business in Chicago for 10 years before relocating to Bellingham, Washington in summer of 2013.  Her engineering background made for a smooth transition into the studio lighting nerd she is today.  When not spending time doing photography, Jes likes to relax with her husband, their two children, and their border collie (who sheds enough each day that Jes can build another border collie from the hair pile she sweeps up).
