There is a reason why so many authors focus on the idea of journey. It can be easy to get caught up in the destination, to think that the whole point of what we are doing is to get from point A to point B – but you can’t forget that life and adventure happen on the journey. The destination might be the catalyst, but it’s the journey that provides the learned wisdom, the experiences, and gives you the story to tell.

One of the most crucial lessons I have learned is that the journey is the point. As someone who tends to hyperfocus on goals and what comes next, learning to slow down and be present in the moment has made my life sweeter. It has allowed me to connect more deeply with those around me, and it’s allowed me to live life with more presence.

One Twenty-Five Magazine is a journey, and the pages within it are amongst our first tentative steps to finding a road less traveled. It’s easy to focus on the destination, but in the end, it’s the path we take to get there that matters. When I decided to start a magazine, it was important to me that it would provide content that was meaningful. You have so much already fighting for your attention. One Twenty-Five is meant to be a sanctuary, a place where you’ll find quiet encouragement, shared wisdom, and a sense of place in this craft. When you can find a piece of yourself in another’s story, you find kinship and understanding. And from that, you find the motivation and inspiration to do the work and keep putting one foot in front of the other.

The name is a reference to shutter speed… 1/125. I find myself using that speed often in an effort to get enough light on my sensor so that I can capture a moment – even though I know that the resulting images might break the rules or have a sense of imperfection to them. Because sometimes it’s the moment or the feeling that matters far more than the technical accomplishments – it’s about understanding the principles of creativity and then making the choices that are best for you. It’s about caring more about the depth of emotion than the depth of field; yearning for sharpness of memories over sharpness of pixels. It’s about being empowered as a creative artist and knowing that the best stories are the human ones that come from behind the lens. Because really, it’s the human bond that makes this craft something that gives us so much more than a photograph.

In our very first issue of One Twenty-Five, you’ll have the chance to follow along with a fellow creative as she recounts elements of her own journey. Each of the five women featured in the April issue are sharing a piece of their life with you. Each one is coming to this space with an open heart, a vulnerable spirit, an authentic voice, and with wisdom gained from her unique path. We hope that the stories will inspire you, and help you find some clarity and kinship on your own journey. I don’t know where this journey will take us, but I hope that you will come along for the adventure.
